Changes Coming to Two O’Connell Drive Intersections

Effective Monday, September 18, 2017, the City of Corner Brook will enact a “Right Turn Only” at:

  • the intersection of Union Street and O’Connell Drive
  • the private roadway turning out of the Salvation Army Citadel parking lot onto O’Connell Drive

Only right turns will be permitted at these intersections commencing September 18, 2017.

A City review of accident statistics for the intersection of O’Connell Drive and Union Street has identified that a number of accidents are occurring involving drivers attempting to complete a left hand turn while exiting Union Street onto O’Connell Drive. The City of Corner Brook and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) have identified that the four lanes of traffic at this intersection where drivers must judge time and distance appears problematic and has resulted in damage and injury.

The City of Corner Brook has adopted the RNC recommendations concerning Union Street intersection and will install a “Right Turn Only” sign, to mitigate the safety concerns thereby preventing this vehicular maneuver from occurring. As the opposite side of this intersection presents a similar traffic situation, “Right Turn Only” signage will be posted at the exit of the Salvation Army Temple parking lot onto O’Connell Drive.

The City of Corner Brook and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary will monitor these intersections for a 12-month period to determine the effectiveness of this new traffic control in curbing traffic collisions at these intersections.
