Corner Brook City Council opposes conversion to community mailboxes
Written by Administrator on September 4, 2015
Mayor Pender, members of council, and city hall staff met with Canada Post on September 2, 2015.
“Council is opposed to removing door-to-door delivery as it may have a significant negative impact on resident’s accessibility, especially during the winter when snow becomes a factor” was the message delivered to Canada Post by the Mayor. Council outlined the challenging topography of Corner Brook, the strong senior population, job losses, excessive snow, concerns with parking, and the challenges people with mobility and ability issues may face if Canada Post proceeds with the community mailbox program.
Throughout the meeting concerns were raised about the plan to convert, the elimination of door-todoor delivery, personal safety and security, mail security, and locations of the boxes. Mayor Pender raised additional concerns regarding any costs to seniors that may require physician documentation for accommodations.
Canada Post representatives were advised that the City of Corner Brook will not be working with their organization until after the federal election when a final decision is made on the future of door-to-door delivery. Council encouraged Canada Post to hold community consultations sessions and information sessions with residents to explain the process, create awareness, and receive feedback.
