Memorial University Faculty Association Votes Overwhelmingly in Favour of Supporting Divest MUN

Written by on April 28, 2015

This morning Memorial University’s Faculty Association (MUNFA) voted overwhelmingly in favour of supporting Divest MUN’s effort to have Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador divest from fossil fuels. Divest MUN is extremely happy to hear the results of the decision, and expresses their sincerest thanks to MUNFA.

The motion passed also calls upon MUNFA to begin exploring the divestment of its own funds from fossil fuels and calls on its representatives on the University Pension Committee to explore similar measures with respect to Memorial University’s pension funds.

Memorial University is an institution with extensive ties to the fossil fuel industry, and as a province Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the most dependent in Canada on that industry, but in the view of Divest MUN this is all the more reason why initiatives like fossil fuel divestment should start here in Newfoundland and Labrador. We look forward to working together with MUNFA to create a more diverse and sustainable future, both here and elsewhere.
