Minister Offers Condolences on Passing of Barbara Barrett

KingD-022sThe Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, today expressed condolences to the family and friends of Barbara Barrett on her recent passing.

“The theatre arts community has lost a true icon with the passing of Ms. Barrett. Her extensive contributions to the performing arts in our province will leave a lasting impact throughout every performance, particularly those of the Barbara Barrett Theatre. I extend heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Barrett and the entire arts community of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

barbara-barrettFor more than 60 years, Barbara Barrett contributed outstanding service in Newfoundland and Labrador in the realm of theatre arts. Her lifelong relationship with theatre helped advance the activity of the dynamic acting community in the province. She assisted in the production of more than 1,000 performances, encouraged and empowered budding actors, and inspired the creation of theatre groups. She has been named a recipient of the Order of Newfoundland andLabrador (2007) and the Order of Canada (1996) in recognition of her cultural work in the province. Barbara Barrett spearheaded many educational, cultural, and social programs and is regarded as the “matriarch” of theatre in Newfoundland and Labrador.
