Windy conditions today and tonight.

A low pressure system near the west coast of Newfoundland will rapidly intensify as it continues to track northward today. As this system departs a strong southwesterly flow will spread across Newfoundland in its wake.

Wind warnings have been issued for the Northern Peninsula where forecast guidance indicates winds will be strongest. Elsewhere, gusts will likely reach 80 km/h or stronger this afternoon before subsiding somewhat over much of the island this evening. However some areas, especially in Northeastern Newfoundland, may continue to experience strong gusts through tonight, potentially approaching warning criteria along parts of coast if the low becomes a little more intense than currently expected.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor this system and provide additional updates as new information becomes available.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.
